Optional in the E-350, it mates with a five-speed TorqShift automatic transmission. The standard E-350 engine is a 5.4-liter V-8, but a 6.8-liter V-10 that generates 305 hp and 420 pounds-feet of torque can be installed.
For 2005, a new powertrain control module was installed that allows elevated idle speed in order to operate accessories. AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control goes into 2006 wagons.

The Monte Carlo shares the Impala’s mechanical design and engines but comes in sportier two-door styling. Chevy dropped out of the full-size segment when it stopped selling the rear-drive Caprice and Impala SS models at the end of the 1996 model year. The midsize Lumina sedan — now sold only to fleet buyers — was Chevy’s largest car until the new Impala arrived in summer 1999.
At 200 inches from bumper to bumper, the Impala is actually an inch shorter than the midsize Lumina. However, it is 3 inches longer in wheelbase at 110.5, making it a full-size car by cars.com standards. The Impala is nearly 4 inches shorter than the front-drive Dodge Intrepid and about a foot shorter than the rear-drive Ford Crown Victoria, two key rivals.
Styling on the Impala bears some resemblance to Chevy’s midsize Malibu sedan from the front and side. The Impala’s rear has a more dramatic appearance from a full-width panel that encloses round taillamps, a styling touch from years ago.
With an interior volume of 104.5 cubic feet and a 17.6-cubic-foot trunk, the Impala ranks as a full-size car under the EPA’s measurements. The Lumina, by comparison, has 100.5 cubic feet of interior space and a 15.5-cubic-foot trunk.
The base Impala comes with a split, front bench seat for six-passenger capacity. The LS model adds front bucket seats and a split, rear seatback that folds for additional cargo room. Both models have large, easy-to-use controls that are well lit at night, and wide, tall doors that allow easy entry and exit.
Base Impalas use a 180-horsepower 3.4-liter V-6 engine that provides decent acceleration, and the LS has a 200-hp 3.8-liter V-6 that is quieter and delivers stronger acceleration and more enthusiastic passing power. Both engines team with a smooth-shifting four-speed automatic transmission.
Standard safety features include a side-impact airbag for the driver, antilock brakes, all-speed traction control and a tire-inflation monitor. Daytime running lamps also are standard.
The Impala LS comes with a strong engine, athletic handling (and a ride that might be too firm for some), and a comprehensive list of convenience and safety features. The base model is softer, not as quick and more basically furnished. Both are roomy, competent and reasonably priced

The Century vies with the full-size LeSabre in a race to be Buick’s most popular model. It is based on the same design as the Regal, also a midsize sedan, but caters to an older crowd with more conservative styling and a front bench seat that gives it six-passenger capacity.
Exterior
Though the Century’s styling is similar to the Regal’s, a different grille, rear features, trim and wheels give it a unique appearance at first glance. Both ride a 109-inch wheelbase and come in four-door body styles.
Interior
Only the bench seats separate the six-passenger Century’s design from that of the sportier Regal, which is available with front buckets. All models come with a three-place front bench seat with a folding center storage armrest.
Under the Hood
A 175-horsepower 3.1-liter V-6 engine and a four-speed automatic transmission comprise the only powertrain for the Century. The similar Regal comes with a 3.8-liter V-6.
Safety
In addition to the federally required dual front airbags, the Century also comes with standard antilock brakes and traction control. A side-impact airbag for the driver’s seat is included with leather upholstery, which is standard on the Limited and optional on the special edition version of the Custom.

New or Notable
	Three engine choices
	New 171-hp engine for SS
	Coupe and sedan body styles
	Optional side-curtain airbags
Optional OnStar and XM Satellite Radio

What We Like
	Frontal crash-test ratings
	Little road noise
	Comfortable ride
	Attractive, if basic, interior
	Responsive automatic
Built on General Motors' Delta architecture and launched for 2005, the front-wheel-drive subcompact Cobalt comes in sedan and coupe body styles. Most Cobalts initially used a 145-horsepower four-cylinder, but a 205-hp supercharged engine went into the SS Supercharged coupe.
Eight versions are offered for 2006, including two additional SS editions. Sedans come in LS, LT, LTZ and SS trim levels; coupes are offered in LS, LT, SS and SS Supercharged editions. Distinct interiors and wheels help in differentiating the models. Both new offerings for 2006, the basic SS coupe and sedan get 17-inch wheels, an FE3 performance suspension and a 171-hp 2.4-liter engine with variable valve timing.
Exterior
Chevrolet says the Cobalt coupe has an "elegantly tapered reverse C-pillar leading the eye to Chevrolet's signature four round taillamps." Both body styles feature a horizontally split grille with a gold bow tie badge.
SS Supercharged coupes feature bolder fascias and rocker-panel areas. All models have body-colored door handles and jewellike headlights and taillights. A power sunroof is optional.
Base models are equipped with disc brakes in front and drums in the rear, and SS Supercharged coupes have all-disc brakes. Built on a 103.3-inch wheelbase, the Cobalt measures a bit more than 180 inches long overall and 67.9 inches wide. Front and rear stabilizer bars are installed. LS and LT models ride on 15-inch tires, the LTZ holds 16-inchers, the SS gets 17-inch tires and the SS Supercharged coupe is fitted with 18-inch wheels.
Interior
With front bucket seats and a 60/40-split, folding rear seat, all Cobalts seat five occupants. Chevrolet says higher-than-usual seating positions are intended to give sedan occupants a "more commanding view of the road." Occupants can access the trunk area from inside the car.
Standard equipment includes air conditioning, an electric rear defogger, a tilt steering column, a driver information center and a CD player. Heated leather seats, XM Satellite Radio, MP3 playback capability and GM's OnStar communication system are optional.
Under the Hood
LS, LT and LTZ models use a 2.2-liter four-cylinder that produces 145 hp. A supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder in the SS Supercharged coupe develops 205 hp and 200 pounds-feet of torque. In between, SS models hold a new 171-hp 2.4-liter engine.
Normally aspirated engines can team with either a Getrag five-speed-manual gearbox or a four-speed automatic. The SS Supercharged coupe comes only with a five-speed manual.
Safety
Antilock brakes are standard on LT, LTZ and SS models and optional[d1] on LS models. Cobalts with the automatic gearbox and ABS also have traction control. Side curtain-type airbags are optional.
Driving Impressions
Apart from several imperfections, the Cobalt is a cut above the small-car norm, offering good front passenger space and reasonably spirited performance, even with an automatic transmission. The Cobalt is agile around town and stable enough on the highway, but you must pay attention to remain on course. The ride is surprisingly good, with only the more notable bumps and holes causing trouble.

Redesigned for 2000, the LeSabre has been the top-selling model in its class, but will be replaced for the 2006 model year by Buick's new Lucerne. A Celebration Edition was introduced in 2003 and continues into 2005, along with Custom and Limited models. All 2005 LeSabres have GM's OnStar communication system that features upgraded hands-free capabilities. Four new option discount packages and new machine-faced 16-inch aluminum wheels are available. All LeSabres have GM's StabiliTrak electronic stability system. LeSabres are known for conservative styling, led by a distinctive, wide, oval vertical-bar grille. Riding a 112.2-inch wheelbase, the sedan measures 200 inches long overall and 57 inches tall. A Gran Touring Suspension Package features 16-inch touring tires and a specially tuned suspension with a rear stabilizer bar. The Celebration Edition features a blacked-out grille, body-colored lower fascias and rocker moldings, integrated turn-signal indicators on the outside mirrors and 16-inch chrome-plated wheels. A standard front bench seat lets the LeSabre seat six occupants. Optional front bucket seats are generally installed in only a small number of LeSabre models. The Limited sedan has a rear center armrest with a pass-thru to the spacious trunk, which holds 18 cubic feet of cargo. Buick describes the front seat as "catcher's mitt" style because of its operation. In a rear-end collision, each head restraint moves up and forward, close to the occupant's head, as a means of reducing the risk of whiplash injury. Power windows and locks, cruise control, lockout protection and a theft-deterrent system are standard. The Leather & Sound Group of options includes CD and cassette players and XM Satellite Radio. The Leather & Comfort Group adds heated front leather seats and mirrors, moisture-sensing wipers and side-impact airbags. Buick's familiar 3.8-liter V-6 produces 205 horsepower and 230 pounds-feet of torque and drives the front wheels via a four-speed-automatic transmission. Antilock brakes are standard on all models. Side-impact airbags are standard in the Limited model and optional in the Custom. Far removed from the big Buicks of old, the modern LeSabre offers plenty of passenger space, a satisfying ride experience, reasonable fuel economy and a moderate price. Not only is its performance smooth, but this sedan is also more satisfying than many shoppers may expect. The LeSabre accelerates eagerly — practically lunging ahead when the gas pedal hits the floor — and takes full advantage of its excellent powertrain. Downshifts are quick and easy. all maintenance is up to date timing belt has just been changed, recent tune up oil change coolant service etc.
Hyundai’s most popular model earned fresh styling and larger dimensions for 2001. In both size and price, the front-drive compact slots between the subcompact Accent and the midsize Sonata.
No change is evident on the four-door GLS sedan for 2002, but Hyundai launched a sporty new companion as a very late 2001 model. Unveiled at the New York Auto Show in April 2001, the Elantra GT is a European-themed, five-door hatchback sedan, while the regular Elantra is a conventional four-door sedan with a trunk.
On sale since June 2001, the GT promises the comfort and handling of a Eurosedan, mixed with the cargo-carrying versatility of a hatchback. A tauter-than-usual suspension for the GT uses higher-rate springs, gas-filled shock absorbers and larger-diameter stabilizer bars. All-disc brakes, fog lamps and five-spoke alloy wheels are installed. Under the hood is the same 140-horsepower engine used in the regular Elantra.
Exterior
Highlighted by strong character lines, the Elantra’s styling is more chiseled and European-looking than on prior models. The Elantra rides a 102.7-inch wheelbase, measures 177.1 inches long overall, stands 56.1 inches high and stretches 67.7 inches wide.
Interior
Hyundai claims that a longer wheelbase and redesigned interior result in more passenger space in the current five-seat Elantra. The three-place 60/40-split, folding rear seat expands trunk space, which totals 11 cubic feet. Standard equipment includes air conditioning, a four-speaker sound system with a cassette player, a rear defogger, and power windows, locks and mirrors. A six-speaker sound system with a CD player is optional.
Both Elantra models are powered by a 140-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that mates with a standard five-speed manual or an optional four-speed-automatic transmission. Side-impact airbags are standard, and antilock brakes are optional.
Driving Impressions
The Elantra isn’s very enticing at first, but it tends to grow on an open-minded driver and turn into an appealing little automobile. Performance with the manual shift is surprisingly frisky, and the Elantra accelerates with spirit. The gearbox and clutch are well matched to the engine, which permits a gentle engagement for easy takeoffs. But engaging Reverse can be a chore at times. Except for a slight growl during acceleration, the Elantra is quiet on the road. Naturally, an automatic transmission is likely to sap some strength from the 140-hp engine.
The Elantra manages to whip through corners and turn with ease — almost with a passion that is uncommon for a car of its class. Some body lean is evident in curves, but not enough to be troubling. The ride is pleasantly easygoing for a small car, as the Elantra’s suspension copes adeptly with rough spots.
Seats are especially attractive and firmly cushioned, with very good back support. Compared to other glove boxes, the Elantra’s holds more items than most these days. Backseat legroom also is amazing, and even the center rear position isn’t too bad.
Handling is noticeably tauter on the shapely GT hatchback, though not dramatically so, and ride comfort suffers only modestly. It is fun to drive, helped by the easy-to-use manual gearshift and well-behaved clutch. The GT’s leather upholstery is a pleasant bonus. The gauges on the GT are large, but their distinctive hue isn’t the easiest to read at a glance during nighttime driving.

New or Notable Legacy-based Outback Impreza-based Outback Sport Four-cylinder or six-cylinder Manual or automatic Additional ground clearance
What We Like Performance All-wheel-drive operation Interior space Automatic-transmission operation Ground clearance
Subaru’s Outback is a quasi-sport utility vehicle version of the compact Legacy, which is the company’s larger series. Known as sport utility wagons, all of these Outback variants of the Legacy feature SUV-like styling cues and a higher ground clearance. Subaru also offers a smaller Outback Sport that is based on the subcompact Impreza.

At the end of the 2003 model year, Subaru added a base six-cylinder model, designated as the Outback H6-3.0 35th Anniversary Edition. Changes to the Outback are few for 2004.

Seven all-wheel-drive sedan and wagon versions of the Outback are available. They include the H6-3.0 sedan, H6-3.0 L.L. Bean Edition wagon, H6-3.0 VDC sedan and wagon, and three H4 Outbacks. All H6-3.0 models use 3.0-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder engines that produce 212 horsepower. The flagship VDC editions feature Subaru’s Vehicle Dynamic Control electronic stability system and Variable Torque Distribution all-wheel drive. The three H4 Outbacks are equipped with four-cylinder engines.

Exterior
Outback sedans ride a 104.3-inch wheelbase and measure 184.4 inches long overall, versus a 187.4-inch length for wagon models. The Outback sedan has 7.3 inches of ground clearance and stands 58.3 inches tall, compared to a 55.7-inch height for the regular Legacy sedan. The Outback H6-3.0 models have 7.9 inches of ground clearance.

Subaru says the Outback is suitable for light offroad travel. The Outback sedan borrows some of the Outback wagon’s styling cues, which include bigger front fenders, lower-body cladding, large fog lights and two-tone paint.
Interior
Seating for five people is possible with the Outback’s front buckets and rear three-place bench seat. The center rear position has a three-point seat belt. The rear seatback does not fold for additional cargo space, but there is a small pass-thru section into the trunk. Trunk capacity totals 12.4 cubic feet.
The gauges have silver trim rings. The Outback Limited sedan has a standard six-way power driver’s seat, air conditioning, a CD player and dual-mode heated front seats. Outback H6-3.0 models have automatic climate control, an eight-way power driver’s seat and a Momo-designed leather-wrapped steering wheel that’s crafted in mahogany wood.
Under the Hood
Subaru’s 2.5-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine in the Outback H4 sedan sends 165 hp to a four-speed-automatic or five-speed-manual transmission. Outback H6-3.0 sedans use a 212-hp, 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that teams only with the automatic. Subaru has three all-wheel-drive systems available, and the version used depends on the model.
Safety
Antilock brakes are standard. The Outback Limited and H6-3.0 sedans have seat-mounted side-impact airbags to protect front occupants.
All versions gain electronic brake-force distribution, an in-glass antenna and a safety brake-pedal system. Outback Sport models get new active head restraints, all-disc brakes, a new Steel Gray Metallic body color and projector-beam fog lights. These models use the same 165-hp, 2.5-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine as the Legacy. Displaying SUV-like styling cues, the Outback Sport features exclusive body and interior trim and 16-inch alloy wheels.

New or Notable/Available Stow ’n Go seating/Short- and long-wheelbase versions/Two V-6s/Available Touring and Limited models/Side-curtain airbags for all three rows***What We Like/Seating configurations/Storage versatility/Interior space/Available luxury amenities
Redesigned front-wheel-drive minivans from DaimlerChrysler may look similar to their predecessors, but the differences inside take precedence. More than 15 new features appear on 2005 models; the most notable is the “Stow ’n Go” fold-flat-into-the-floor configuration for the second- and third-row seats. These models are the first minivans to have both seats fold into the floor. They can be folded down with one hand in as little as 30 seconds. Built on an all-new platform, the Chrysler Town & Country comes in two sizes. Stow ’n Go seating is standard in the long-wheelbase LX, Touring and Limited models. Side curtain-type airbags protect outboard occupants in all three rows of seats, and the driver gets an inflatable knee blocker. Developers claim the 2005 minivans are 16 percent quieter than their predecessors. Rear parking assist with an audible warning and a rear overhead display is available. Sales of the 2005 minivans began early in 2004. The Dodge Caravan and Grand Caravan are similar but not as posh as the Town & Country. DaimlerChrysler’s Chrysler Group invented the minivan more than 20 years ago and has sold more than 10 million. Today’s minivan market share for Chrysler and Dodge models is 38 percent. The styling of the new Town & Country is similar to the previous version, but the 2005 models have an entirely new underbody. Trevor Creed, Chrysler Group senior vice president of design, refers to the process as “designing our minivans from the inside out.” Standard-length models ride a 113.3-inch wheelbase, while extended-length minivans have a 119.3-inch wheelbase. A winged Chrysler badge ps the full width of the grille, which has four chrome horizontal bars. Sculpted headlights and a new front fascia that contains round fog lamps are installed. Limited models have chromed fascia inserts. Town & Country minivans get a roof rack. Touring and Limited models have 16-inch cast-aluminum wheels, and other versions ride on 15-inch steel wheels. All Town & Country minivans seat seven occupants. DaimlerChrysler claims that the new models offer as many as 256 possible seating configurations. Bucket seats are installed in the second row, and the third row features a 60/40-split bench seat that can be folded partially or completely. With Stow ’n Go seating, the headrests do not need to be removed in order to fold down the seats. When the second-row seats are upright, two storage bins with integrated lids provide an additional 12 cubic feet of storage space. Standard cargo net bags adjust to fit each storage bin. Outboard breakaway cupholders remain intact when the second-row seats are folded. Split-bench tailgate seating is possible by flipping the third-row seat rearward, and the liftgate can provide protection against the elements. Super High Density Foam cushions, developed for astronauts by NASA, are used in Chrysler’s minivan seats. The second-row seats move fore and aft with 100 mm of travel, recline up to 40 degrees and have 13 positions. The third-row seatbacks recline up to 39 degrees and feature 12 positions. The Impala is Chevrolet's largest sedan, and it shares its basic mechanical design with the midsize Monte Carlo coupe, which flaunts a sportier appearance. An Impala SS joined the lineup for the 2004 model year. Initially available only in black, the SS carries a supercharged V-6 that produces 240 horsepower. In the muscle-car era of the late 1960s and early 1970s, the SS (Super Sport) designation identified a large group of performance models. GM's OnStar communication system features upgraded hands-free capability and is standard on 2005 models. In addition to black, the Impala SS is now offered in two new colors and gains body-colored "SS" badging with a gold bow tie emblem. The front bucket seats in the SS get "halo-design" headrests. Chrome-finish 17-inch cast-aluminum wheels are now available on SS sedans, while base models can be equipped with a Sport Appearance Package. Exterior The Impala has a full-width panel that encloses four round taillights. Impalas have a fully independent suspension and all-disc brakes. Base and LS models use 16-inch wheels, while SS models have 17-inchers. A new rooftop-mounted antenna is used for the OnStar system. SS sedans flaunt a monochromatic theme, including color-keyed bodyside moldings and grille. They also have a lowered front fascia with integrated fog lamps. Performance tires are installed on the Impala SS, which features a sport-tuned FE4 suspension with stiffer springs and thicker stabilizer bars. Interior Classified as a full-size car by the Environmental Protection Agency's spaciousness standard, the Impala has 104.5 cubic feet of passenger volume. Its trunk holds 18.6 cubic feet of cargo. In base form, the Impala has a split front bench seat to accommodate six occupants. The LS sedan is equipped with front bucket seats and a split rear seatback that folds down for additional cargo space. Tall, wide doors permit easy entry and exit. An XM Satellite Radio is optional. Under the Hood A 180-hp, 3.4-liter V-6 powers the base Impala, while a 200-hp, 3.8-liter V-6 is standard in the upscale LS version. The Impala SS gets a supercharged 3.8-liter V-6 that produces 240 hp and 280 pounds-feet of torque. All engines team with a four-speed-automatic transmission. Safety All-disc antilock brakes and all-speed traction control are standard on LS and SS sedans and optional on the base model. A side-impact airbag for the driver is optional. Daytime running lights and LATCH child-safety seat tethers are installed. Driving Impressions Even the Impala's smaller engine provides decent acceleration. The 3.8-liter V-6 is quieter, delivers stronger performance from a standstill and unleashes more enthusiastic passing power on the highway. The automatic transmission operates with excellence and produces barely noticeable shifts. The LS steers with a relatively light touch for a large car, and it feels more solidly built than some General Motors sedans. The Impala is easy to drive and maneuver, and it corners rather nimbly. The LS's ride can't be called soft, but its suspension cushions quite a bit of pavement roughness. All power equipment is functioning properly. There are no known defects in this vehicle

Durango is larger than most midsize SUVs like the Ford Explorer, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Chevrolet Blazer while challenging full-size models such as the Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition with its V-8 engines and optional eight-passenger seating.
Exterior
Styling on the Durango, a four-door wagon, is the same as the Dakota pickup from the windshield forward. With an overall length of 193 inches, Durango is 10 inches longer than the Chevrolet Blazer and 3 inches longer than the Ford Explorer.
Interior
The redesigned instrument panel includes new gauges, climate controls and a tilt-steering column with a greater adjustment range. A new floor console for models with front bucket seats includes three cupholders, an armrest and several storage bins.
Durango seats as few as five and as many as eight. An optional two-place rear seat and a three-place front bench can augment a pair of front buckets and a three-place middle bench. Both the middle and rear seats fold flat for maximum cargo room of 88 cubic feet.
Under the Hood
Durango comes only with V-8 engines. A 235-horsepower 4.7-liter V-8 is the base engine and teams with a five-speed automatic transmission. A 5.9-liter V-8 with 250 hp is the top engine choice and comes with a four-speed automatic.
Durango comes with rear-wheel drive or a choice of two four-wheel-drive systems. The standard 4WD system is the part-time type that can't be used on smooth, dry pavement, and the optional system operates full-time.
Both are engaged by a dashboard switch instead of a floor-mounted transfer-case lever.
Driving Impressions
Durango attracts buyers from the compact and full-size SUV markets by offering V-8 engines and nearly full-size interior space in a more manageable, competitively priced exterior package. The 5.9-liter V-8 is more powerful, but the 4.7-liter engine is a newer design that is smoother, quieter and nearly as lively.

What We Like

	Ride comfort
The Forenza, which targets value-oriented buyers, was partially designed by Pininfarina in Italy. Its 2.0-liter four-cylinder is rated at 127 horsepower, and rivals include the Honda Civic, Nissan Sentra and Toyota Corolla.
Seat-mounted side-impact airbags were installed in all models for 2005. Fresh front-end styling, a new wheel design and a revised interior marked the 2006 Forenza. For 2007, a tire pressure monitoring system and warning light come standard, and remote keyless entry with remote trunk release is optional.
Exterior
Suzuki touts the Forenza's "gracefully curved roofline and uniquely free-flowing silhouette," noting that it provides maximum visibility. Clear, oversized taillamps complement European-style dual cylindrical halogen headlights, and the side molding is color-keyed.
The Forenza features pull-out door handles, and fog lamps are available. Speed-sensitive power steering and all-disc brakes are installed. Measuring 177.2 inches long overall, the Forenza rides a 102.4-inch wheelbase and stands 56.9 inches tall. Steel or aluminum wheels hold 15-inch tires.
Interior
Up to five occupants can fit inside the Forenza. The instruments are rimmed with metallic silver accents, and the panel emits a jade-green glow for night driving. Equipped with three head restraints, the 60/40-split rear seats fold flat.
Height and lumbar support adjustments for the driver and a tilt steering wheel are included. The padded front center armrest contains a storage compartment. Trunk space totals 12.4 cubic feet.
Standard equipment includes air conditioning with micron air filtration, heated mirrors, and power windows and locks. A standard in-dash cassette/CD stereo system includes eight speakers. Suzuki's Premium Package adds cruise control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, 15-inch alloy wheels, fog lamps and antilock brakes.
Under the Hood
The Forenza's 2.0-liter four-cylinder produces 127 hp at 5,600 rpm and 131 pounds-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. Either a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission can be installed. A "hold" button for the automatic prevents gear hunting in hilly terrain.
Safety
Antilock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution are included in the Premium Package. Seat-mounted side-impact airbags are standard. Each rear occupant gets a three-point seat belt.

New or Notable
	Choice of three engines
	Four trim levels
	5.3-liter V-8 in Impala SS
	Flex-fuel versions available
	Standard side curtain airbags
	Flip-and-fold rear seat

What We Like
	Performance of SS
	Interior space
	Adept transmission
	Gas mileage
An old Chevrolet name earned a moderate update for the 2006 model year that included the addition of a small-block V-8 powertrain. Introduced at the 2005 Greater Los Angeles Auto Show, the latest Impala front-wheel-drive sedan remains related to the company's Monte Carlo midsize coupe.

Engines include a 211-horsepower V-6, a larger 233-hp V-6 and a 303-hp V-8. For 2007, Impalas with the smaller V-6 can be ordered with ethanol-based E85 compatibility, and those with the larger V-6 gain a cylinder deactivation system for improved fuel economy. Other major changes include an enhanced OnStar system with optional turn-by-turn navigation.

Four trim levels are available: LS, LT, LTZ and SS. Inside, innovative flip-and-fold rear seat cushions reveal a covered storage area and include grocery bag hooks. The rear seatback folds down to create a pass-thru into the trunk. Interiors also display improved seat-upholstery stitching, low-gloss instrument-panel components and jewel-like dashboard details.

Impalas ride on 16-, 17- or 18-inch wheels. Side curtain airbags are standard. Most models benefit from enhanced antilock brakes and traction control.

Impalas compete against the Ford Five Hundred, Chrysler 300 and Toyota Avalon. The Impala nameplate dates back to 1958, when it was the top-end member of Chevrolet's full-size car lineup.

Exterior

Large headlights contain three independent lighting units, and Impalas have grab-style door handles.

SS sedans exhibit a distinct front-end look, led by a dual-split grille that contains a black-diamond crosshatch pattern. Corvette-inspired bright exhaust outlets are installed on SS models. A rear spoiler is standard on the LTZ and SS and optional on the LT.

The base Impala has a softer suspension that's fully independent and rides on 16-inch wheels. Midlevel Impalas receive 17-inch wheels, while the Impala SS gets a sportier suspension with 18-inch wheels. Built on a 110.5-inch wheelbase, the Impala is 200.4 inches long overall and 72.9 inches wide.

Interior

Depending on the choice of front seats, the Impala holds either five or six occupants. Nuance sandstone leather seating with French seams on the center cushions is available. The seats have firmer cushions and increased lumbar support.

An all-new instrument panel wraps into the door panels; its double-hump design is reminiscent of early Corvettes. All Impalas except the SS offer a choice of trim: either a wood-trimmed look or a sportier brushed sterling appearance. The Impala SS has a patterned trim panel. The glove box is 20 percent larger than before, and trunk space totals 18.6 cubic feet.

General Motors' OnStar communication system is standard, and an available Directions and Connections service gives audio turn-by-turn directions from an OnStar operator. Manual dual-zone climate control and a remote starter that can warm or cool the car prior to entry are available. Cruise control buttons are mounted on the steering wheel, and auxiliary radio controls are optional, as are heated seats, leather upholstery and power front seats.

Impalas can be equipped with one of three audio systems. A standard six-speaker CD stereo includes an auxiliary jack for iPods or other MP3 players. A midlevel system can play MP3-formatted CDs, while a top-end Bose system includes eight speakers and a six-CD changer.
